Dr. Koan Heindel is an orthopedic surgeon with specialty training in arthroscopy and orthopedic sports medicine. As an orthopedic surgeon he focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal disorders, as well as injuries of the upper and lower extremities. Although a surgeon, he offers a combination of advanced nonoperative and operative techniques to treat injuries in patients of all ages and activity levels. He emphasizes joint preservation, reduction of pain, and restoration of function. His practice philosophy is to treat patients like family, with compassion, respect, and care. 

Dr. Heindel completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Here he gained experience in advanced shoulder, knee, and hip arthroscopy, cartilage preservation, meniscus repair and transplant procedures, and shoulder arthroplasty. He served as a team physician and treated athletes of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, University of Buffalo, Niagara University, Buffalo State, and several area high schools. He has additional experience with University of Akron and Kent State University athletics. 

Dr. Heindel completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Western Reserve Hospital and earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries Science from Virginia Tech. Over the years he has volunteered on a number of occasions providing physicals for the Lebron James Family Foundation, as a member of the Chicago Marathon medical team, and as co-director of a Groovin’ in the Grove 5k Race.  

Dr. Heindel believes ongoing education is of utmost importance. He is involved in resident and medical student education, and attends a number of national meetings annually to stay up-to-date on treatment modalities. He is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North American, Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, and American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.  

Dr. Heindel enjoys spending free time with his wife and two children. His hobbies include hiking, biking, running, basketball, watching sports, fishing, and woodworking.
